The trick here is to try and pry it open from one of the edges. ![]() However, if you’re driving a newer car, most likely, the stereo unit will be protected by a dashboard panel instead, which is a lot harder to remove. The owners of older cars will be happy to learn that the trim is the only thing keeping them from getting their hands on the car stereo. The trim isn’t very cheap, so, if you damage it, that’s gonna cost you a pretty penny. Don’t overdo it, though: if the trim is refusing to pop off, maybe there’s a “secret” bolt or screw somewhere – find it. Carefully put it under the trim and apply just the right amount of pressure for it to come off. So, use a screwdriver (preferably, one with a flat head) to pop it off. The trim won’t “give up” easily even after you remove all the screws/bolts. Now, don’t throw the installation hardware away after you remove it – keep it around so that you can reinstall the trim later. You’ll find them at the very bottom, hidden from the naked eye. It’s just a piece of plastic covering the stereo unit and will be secured with a pair of bolts or screws. With that out of the way, move on to the stereo’s trim. As for the required tools, a flathead screwdriver, a pry bar, a socket wrench, and a pair of protective gloves are the only equipment you’ll need for today. The positive, in turn, is black and is marked with a “+”. The negative is marked with a “– “ symbol, and it’s colored red. The positive terminal/cable shouldn’t touch anything metallic either. Make sure that the two cables don’t come in contact. So, open the hood, locate the battery unit, and unplug the negative wire next, unscrew the nut on the positive terminal. I’m talking about a short circuit, or even shock. If you forget to do it, the consequences can be pretty dire. This is the most important safety precaution.
